Looking back on all you’ve accomplished in and out of the classroom builds a foundation for what you hope to achieve in the coming months—or even further down the road. Let’s explore the intricacies of using reflection and goal setting to become a more rounded student, plus how to make improvements that will get you ahead for the next academic year.

Reflecting on what went well last school year

There are three main areas that define a successful school term: academic achievement, extracurricular activities, and personal growth. These become all the more important when you stop to acknowledge and learn from your experiences for future success.

Academic achievement

Look at how well you performed in class this past year compared to the year before. Did your grades improve? Did you overcome any particularly challenging learning curves along the way? These considerations provide interesting insight into your student journey and relationships with your teachers, including how you learn best and with whom. They can also give you the necessary confidence to face the incoming challenges of a new academic year.

Extracurricular activities

An introspective look into your extracurricular activities should involve evaluating what you consider achievements in your hobbies and interests. Perhaps you took up a new sport, joined the debate team, or participated in a volunteer program. What was your experience with these ventures? Did you receive any awards or accolades? Did you struggle in any areas? How have these activities and events influenced your general perspective on life? Be proud of how far you have come in all areas of your life as a student and use that as motivation to rack up even more accomplishments. And be sure to note everything down on your résumé!

Personal growth

Reflecting on your behavior for personal growth can be a complex endeavor, as it usually involves a very honest review of how much closer you’ve come to being an even better version of yourself. Pay attention to how your strengths and weaknesses have manifested throughout the year and how they’ve affected your professional development. Did you learn new skills like leadership, teamwork, or time management? What about your emotional intelligence? Are you better at reading social situations now than you were last term? There won’t be as clear goalposts here, as personal growth is a little more abstract. But any growth is good growth.

Identifying areas for improvement

Celebrating your accomplishments is important, but so is identifying what held you back. For example, many students struggle with inadequate academic preparedness, especially when transitioning from high school to college. Technology distractions, social isolation, and a general lack of motivation are all potential issues that can impede your growth as a student. At the end of the day, everyone’s areas of improvement differ. The important thing is to acknowledge them and decide that you won’t let these issues hold you back any longer. Of course, this also requires a candid review of your limitations so you know when to ask for help. Self-awareness and mindfulness can help you manage your attitude toward particular challenges and adapt to situations as needed.

Setting goals for next year

Now that you’ve reflected on your growth and identified areas of improvement, you need to develop specific and achievable benchmarks for your academic, extracurricular, and personal development goals. These should revolve around overcoming specific limitations and tracking your progress. For example, if you have difficulty keeping up with lessons, set a goal to enhance your note-taking as a step to improving your overall learning strategy. You can do this by handwriting notes and typing them later, which can improve your retention by up to 75%; you could also join study groups, as research shows you can retain 70% more information through discussion and up to 95% more by teaching a subject to someone else. Setting smaller goals like these will make you feel more confident and adequately prepared to accomplish your long-term goals.

Setting extracurricular and personal development goals involves aligning your activities with your interests and areas of development. What are some skills you think you’ll need to progress professionally? Someone who wants to pursue a career in public speaking might sign up for the debate team or join the drama club and set a goal to win a debate or land a role by the end of the semester. Establish milestones you can use to measure how far you’ve come in meeting your long-term goals and recognize areas that may be hindering your advancement.

Looking back on the previous school year and setting achievable objectives for the upcoming one increases your self-awareness and chances of success. Beautiful things start to happen in your academic and personal life when you take the time to reflect and purposefully set goals from those reflections. This process is also essential in helping you decide the next steps in your student journey that will set you up for a thriving career.

After nearly three months of rest and relaxation, readjusting to the academic year and all its responsibilities is particularly jarring. The good news is there are entertaining and informative TV shows and movies that can help you ease back into the school mindset. Hopefully, these suggestions take your back-to-school blues and turn them into back-to-school excitement!

Warning: Minor spoilers ahead

Gilmore Girls

Gilmore Girls has long been one of television's most celebrated programs. The show follows Lorelai and Rory Gilmore, a mother-daughter duo navigating life, love, and familial relations. Rory is an extremely bright teenager, which leads to her acceptance at Chilton Preparatory School, a prestigious private high school. While Rory is thrilled to be a “Chilton Girl,” her ultimate dream is to attend Harvard University, and she works hard to realize that dream throughout the series. From running for student government to writing for the school newspaper, Rory’s journey is an inspiration, reminding students that hard work pays off when she (ironically) is accepted to and attends Harvard’s biggest rival, Yale University. This cozy show couldn’t be more academic and college centered—what’s better for the back-to-school mindset?

Never Have I Ever

Never Have I Ever is not only an entertaining series but also one of the most culturally significant programs to premiere in the past 10 years. Credited as a watershed moment for South Asian representation in Hollywood, the critically acclaimed series breaks many long-standing stereotypes. At the beginning of the series, protagonist Devi Vishwakumar is disconnected from her Tamil heritage, but as the series progresses, she begins to appreciate her identity. The show has many moments where Devi’s heritage is on full display through prayer, wedding, and funeral scenes, helping viewers learn more about other cultures.

This show is a great choice for a back-to-school binge because most of the scenes center around Devi’s high school experience. Throughout the series, Devi—who has strong academic drive and is highly motivated—aspires to attend Princeton University. The fourth season dives deeper into her college search, depicting the application process. While more dramatized than reality, Devi’s application experiences can serve as a window into the upcoming process for rising seniors and curious juniors. Never Have I Ever is a wonderfully poignant show that will inspire and entertain you at the same time.

Legally Blonde

In this day and age, you’d be hard-pressed to find a person who hasn’t at least heard of Legally Blonde, let alone seen it. Easily one of the most iconic movies of the 2000s, Legally Blonde is as popular as ever with people across the globe. At first glance, it may appear to be a stereotypical chick flick, but that couldn’t be further from the truth. A feminist power ballad, the film follows sorority queen Elle Woods (and her Chihuahua, Bruiser, of course) through her first year at Harvard Law School. After initially enrolling to win back her ex-boyfriend, Warner, she discovers, much to her surprise, that she has a knack and passion for law.

One of the most endearing parts of Legally Blonde, and something we can all learn from, is how Elle remains true to herself during her evolution, always wearing her signature bright pink and unafraid of being deemed too “girly” in a male-dominated field. While it may not be the most educational watch on this list, it gives audiences a much-needed reminder about staying true to themselves, even in environments—like school—where assimilation is the norm.

NOVA

For those interested in science, NOVA is an educational documentary series that will prove to be an enjoyable diversion from typical classroom learning. With topics from archaeology to astronomy to computer science and more, there’s guaranteed to be an episode on a subject that will enthrall you. NOVA is also a great way to get a sneak preview of subjects that will be covered in the coming school year (so maybe it won’t totally prevent you from thinking about school). The program is also a hit with many teachers, so chances are you’ll interact with their content at some point during the year, whether it be on your own or in class.

The classic teen comedy follows Ferris Bueller as he plays hooky for one perfect day with his best friend and girlfriend. Even though the movie came out in 1986, it still makes audiences laugh and relate almost 40 years later. While this one may not be the most educational movie either, it’s a fun romp that will put you in the back-to-school spirit. (Just don’t get too inspired and skip the first day!)

Unfortunately, so often amid the din of student organizations trying to recruit you for various activities and committees shoving events in your face, it’s easy to become confused about what to try or attend. To help you navigate all the activities, opportunities, and experiences you’ll be exposed to in high school, we’ve compiled the ultimate high school bucket list (inspired by The Jessica Martin’s) featuring the most fun and engaging events to go to and things to try!

Freshman year fun

Freshman year is a time of great growth and learning as you transition from middle to high school. You can become acquainted with your new environment and build relationships with your peers by doing the following during your first year.

Write a letter to yourself: Use this note to reflect on who you are as you start your high school journey. Once completed, seal the letter and save it to open on graduation day to see how you grew from a humble freshman to mighty senior.

Join a club: Clubs are a great way to pursue your interests and meet other likeminded students, most of whom are in other grades and can help guide you through your first year of high school.

Attend a sports event: Athletic games are a great way for students to come together and face a common enemy: the rival high school. Sporting events also help you get into the school spirit!

Join in on homecoming festivities: Homecoming is a great way to experience multi-generational school pride as you interact with current students and alumni and participate in fun activities.

Go to a school dance: School dances, like a homecoming dance, are a great way to hang out with friends and relax after a long week of school. There’s nothing like blowing off steam on the dance floor.

Sophomore year spirit

Once sophomore year arrives, you may think you are automatically more mature than you were last year and there are no new experiences left. But that simply isn’t true. Sophomore year of high school is still a time of great growth and self-reflection. Continue to deepen your involvement, build relationships, and expose yourself to new things by trying the following activities.

Attend a school play: School plays are often overlooked as community functions despite all the hard work many students put into them. Attend a production to support your peers and experience all your school has to offer—you may even start to look forward to them every year!

Join a team: Now that you’re a sophomore and have better time management skills, it’s a great time to try out for a team or individual sport. You’ll not only build discipline and get some exercise but develop new friendships and add to your résumé.

Join a club that challenges you: If you aren’t the most athletic person, have no fear—there are other extracurricular options to challenge you. Whether it’s the mock trial, Model UN, or robotics team, there’s likely a club that piques your interest.

Write for a school publication: Writing an article for the school newspaper or fiction for a literary magazine is a great way to improve your writing skills while keeping your schoolmates up to date on important events or entertaining them with your prose.

Junior year jaunts

Junior year is often billed as “the big year” for high school students. In this year of heightened stress and responsibilities involving the college search, the following fun activities can be a good diversion.

Go on a school trip: Many schools offer spring break trips as an add-on to a class or as standalone options to introduce students to new places. These trips are a great way to experience the world while enjoying time with your friends.

Tour a college: During junior year, the college process begins to ramp up. Start touring colleges to gain a sense of different types of schools you could attend and what suits you well. Starting this exploration junior year will help make the application process less hectic during senior year.

Join student government: Student government is another way to contribute to your school community. Using this platform, you can advocate for change in your school, create helpful initiatives, and develop your leadership skills.

Start a club: If you feel like your school lacks a certain student group that would benefit others, this is the perfect time to create it yourself! Leading a club is a great way to give back to the school community that has given you so much and boost your college applications at the same time.

Senior year sentiments

The final year of your high school career is a bittersweet one. The excitement of moving on to new horizons is mixed with the sadness of leaving friends and family behind—not to mention all the memories you made along the way. Enjoy your last high school moments by partaking in these events during your senior year.

Your last homecoming: Make sure you go to homecoming senior year to celebrate the school you will soon be leaving. Homecoming is also an opportunity to meet alumni and learn about their experiences post-graduation for a glimpse at your potential future.

Final lunch: Even if you rarely eat lunch in the school cafeteria, you should do it on your last day of school. This meal will be a final chance to sit around the table and hang out with your nearest and dearest friends—and the school community at large—before jetting off on your next adventure.

Senior prom: This one doesn’t need much explanation. Senior prom is a night to celebrate you and all your accomplishments, plus hit the dance floor with your friends one last time. Enjoy it!

High school graduation: It’s not like anyone needs a reminder to go to graduation since it is the capstone of your high school experience. This is a day to celebrate your accomplishments with family and friends, so make sure to really take in the moment while you’re in it and even throw a party!

Open your freshman letter: When all is said and done on graduation day, open the letter you wrote at the start of freshman year and reflect upon how far you’ve come. (Then get excited about where you’ll go from here!)

You likely have free access to a student fitness center and should have more than enough time between classes to work up a sweat in the gym or around campus. Your college may even offer gym classes and martial arts courses for credits.

Finding time for fitness in college will help you stay motivated throughout the semester and build stronger exercise habits. You could even consider doubling up on the benefits of exercising by learning a few self-defense skills to keep you safe and more aware of your surroundings on campus. With all these options in mind, let’s explore how you can make time for fitness and find an exercise routine that works for you as a college student.

Finding time for fitness in college

If you’re a busy student with a full course load, you may feel like you don’t have the time or energy to focus on physical fitness. This is a common mistake, as folks who don’t engage in exercise often underestimate the energy-boosting potential of a great workout. Research shows that physical exercise enhances your cognitive function in the following ways:

Boosting learning and memory

Enhancing attention and executive functioning

Supporting academic achievements

Improving mood and emotional state

Increasing mental flexibility and adaptability

Investing time and effort into a workout routine you enjoy will also help you reap rewards in the classroom. Taking an hour out of your day to move your body is well worth the short-term effort for the long-term benefits. You shouldn’t lose sleep or skip classes to work out either. Instead, intentionally plan fitness breaks into your day based on your class schedule.

Making exercise work if you live off campus

If you live at home or in an off-campus apartment, you can still get a great workout if you build yourself a small exercise space at home. Declutter your space to free up some floor area and

invest in a few pads to avoid damaging concrete or tile floors. Create a plan with details like where you’ll store barbells or yoga mats when you’re not using them, then look for used sports equipment stores in the area. Building a designated workout space will make it easier to exercise at home and help you make the most of your busy schedule during the semester.

Fitness routines to consider

If you’re unsure of how to start improving your fitness in your free time, get the ball rolling with some of the best fitness routines you can incorporate into a college student’s schedule.

Couch to 5K: You can find free couch to 5K programs online that are designed to get you used to running while avoiding injury. This can be particularly beneficial if it's been a while since you laced up your running shoes.

Bodybuilding: Lifting weights is the bread and butter of gym programs. There are plenty of free online programs to help you get started building muscle and strength.

Swimming: Doing laps in the campus pool is a great way to clear your mind and enhance full-body fitness. Swimming can help you live longer too, which makes it the perfect exercise for longevity.

Yoga: A well-crafted yoga flow can help you breathe deep and improve mobility. Even simple flows like ying yoga for back health can improve how you feel daily.

Leaning into a fitness regime can be mentally stimulating too. There’s plenty to learn when you’re new to working out, and you’ll find it easy to connect with the community by asking questions about building muscle or trying a new stretch.

Once you form a fitness habit in college, you’ll also want to start taking your rest and recovery seriously. This is crucial—you can’t expect to gain muscle or achieve a personal best without eating right, getting enough sleep, and taking rest days. Get more from your workouts by tracking your diet and following a macronutrient ratio of 25% fat, 30% protein, and 45% carbs. This will keep you fueled throughout the day and help you achieve your health and fitness goals.

Related: Simple and Effective Exercise Routines for the Busy Student

Personal safety-focused exercise

If you want to get in shape but struggle with confidence, a self-defense course could be the right fit for you. There are plenty of martial arts to choose from, and you’re sure to find a practice that suits you. If you’re long-limbed, a striking art like Muay Thai may be fun. If you’re a little shorter, a grappling style like Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu may be better. If you love fighting, more intense arts like MMA or Judo are probably right for you. If you just want to work out and improve your balance, styles without sparring could be best. Do a little research when weighing your options. Self-defense and martial arts classes can vary wildly in price, so be sure to find one that fits your budget or look for free opportunities on campus.

Also, as a note of caution: While martial arts can help you feel confident and improve your personal safety, if you do find yourself in a conflict, you should avoid a fight. Instead of trying out your new skills, get out of the situation. Every conflict is unpredictable and could lead to serious injury.

Fitness is a great way to improve your academic performance in college and de-stress during a long semester. Spending an hour in the pool or at the gym can help you clear your mind and give you opportunities to make friends with like-minded fitness folks. Just be sure to recover properly after each workout to stay mentally sharp and succeed in college.

However, your physical fitness is as vital as your mental health if you want to earn your diploma or degree with flying colors. Coursework can be arduous, but sneaking in opportunities for quick fitness during your study breaks can help relieve stress and promote overall wellness. Here are six tips any student can use to maximize their free time, get moving, and improve their physical health.

1. Perform desk exercises

“Deskercises,” as I like to call them, can help improve circulation and relieve muscle tightness without leaving your workspace and making a scene. The best desk exercises can be done while seated. Shoulder shrugs are a great antidote to neck tension that builds up during stressful study sessions. Simply pull your shoulders toward your ears and roll them down slowly to melt away strain in that area.

Neck rolls are another low-key exercise that works wonders. They’re a good remedy for improper posture usually caused by looking at a computer screen that’s situated too high or low on your desk. To alleviate neck pain, lean your head forward while sitting upright and rotate it clockwise. Draw numerous imaginary circles with your nose before switching and rotating counterclockwise.

2. Stretch your muscles

While stretching alone won’t make you ripped, it does alleviate stress and makes you more flexible. Flexibility is crucial for performing other physical activities painlessly, as it helps your joints move through their full range of motion with less risk of injury. Many stretches can be seated desk exercises, like leg extensions. Point your toes and raise an extended leg until it’s as high as your seat’s height. Hold it to stretch out your calf and hamstring muscles, and then do the other leg.

If you prefer standing up, a standing quad stretch is super convenient and effective. Lift one of your legs behind you to grab your foot at the ankle while holding your chair’s backrest with your other hand to keep your balance. Pull your foot toward your buttocks and stay in that position until you feel the heat in your thigh muscles. Consider leaning forward to stretch your quads further and feel it in your hamstrings. Switch legs and repeat the process several times.

Related: Simple and Effective Exercise Routines for the Busy Student

3. Declutter your study area

Tidying up makes your space more conducive to learning and gives you an opportunity to stand up and get a few steps in at the same time. The amount of fat you can burn as you organize and clean up your stuff depends on how big of a mess you have to deal with. However, developing a habit of removing clutter from your environment contributes to your fitness. A clutter-free room or workspace promotes productivity and boosts your energy levels. It also alleviates anxiety and improves your focus, enabling you to hit both your academic and health goals.

4. Cook something healthy

Many students prefer to dine out or order takeout because cooking can be a chore. However, it’s worth doing if you want to use your quick study breaks to be fit and healthy. Making time for cooking is a deliberate choice to prioritize your well-being in more ways than one.

Preparing snacks and meals involving manual tasks can increase your heart rate and give your arms and legs a little workout or stretching time. Also make every effort to eat the rainbow! At least five fruits and vegetables should dominate your plate every day, and whole-grain carbs and protein should round it out. Keep dairy to a minimum and choose low-fat and low-sugar versions. For oils, always go with the unsaturated kind.

5. Walk at a brisk pace

Walking is more than cardio—it helps you clear your mind and gives you some respite from the stresses of school. You can break a sweat even when you move at an average pace. However, brisk walking will help you cover more ground in less time and get fit more quickly.

Brisk walks can be nearly as tiring as running, so it’s easy to lose motivation to go on. An effective strategy to hold yourself accountable is to find friends to join you. Research has found that you’re more likely to finish an exercise program by involving at least three pals or family members. You’re also more likely to maintain 66% of your health progress when exercising with a group.

In my experience, I got into shape more successfully when I had company than when I was alone because we were each other’s support system. It’s also a nice way to socialize and expand your circle of friends. The only challenge may be finding willing brisk walk companions who are free during your study breaks. Consider approaching your classmates since they’re on similar schedules and more likely to be available when you are.

6. Hop on a bike

Cycling is a fun and productive way to spend a study break. This physical activity can help you stay fit, reduce cholesterol, strengthen your legs, elevate your brain power, and improve your balance, coordination, and posture. Not only is this activity easy to learn and gentle on your joints, but it’s also a zero-emission transportation option. You can run errands on two wheels without spending a dime on gas and worrying about contributing to air pollution.

Thankfully, many American cities, universities, and colleges have invested significantly in bike paths. Stanford University and Colorado State University are two colleges leading the charge. Both campuses have held Platinum Bicycle Friendly University status—the highest honor the League of American Bicyclists can give to educational institutions—for more than a decade!

Free time is scarce when you’re a busy student. But by dedicating your study breaks to quick fitness opportunities and being active whenever possible, you’ll be sure to hit all your academic and health-related goals.

From keeping up with academic demands to maintaining a social circle to managing other responsibilities, campus life can get hectic and overwhelming.

Finding balance in everything is the key to enjoying college while keeping your stress levels in check. Here are seven effective stress busters to help you manage your mental health during your college years and create the perfect balance for a variety of experiences!

1. Stay organized with a schedule

One of the most significant sources of college stress comes from managing your time. Juggling classes, assignments, work, and internships with personal time can feel overwhelming as a college student, but you can get organized and stress less by doing a few key things, such as:

Creating a weekly schedule: Don’t just make a schedule for your classes and study sessions. Include social time and self-care hours in your weekly routine for better time management.

Using a physical or digital planner: Use tools like Google Calendar, Notion, or a physical planner that can help you track your assignments, deadlines, and events.

Prioritizing tasks: Break down your tasks into smaller sections and focus on dealing with the most urgent tasks first.

Related: Top 6 Apps You Need to Download for Academic Success

2. Exercise regularly

It’s no surprise that exercising is a powerful stress buster. Physical activity releases endorphins, a natural mood booster that can clear your mind and make you feel better instantly. Committed workout routines aren’t necessary either; with limited personal time at hand, college students can even benefit from short, daily movement.

Start small with a 10–15-minute walk around campus or a quick workout in your room to help increase your blood circulation. You could also join a fitness class like yoga, Pilates, or dance, which offer both physical benefits and an opportunity to socialize. Alternatively, finding some friends to join you for a day-long hike or workout sessions at the gym can make exercise more fun.

3. Practice mindfulness and meditation

Along with exercising your body, it’s also important to exercise your mind to reduce stress. Mindfulness and meditation can keep you grounded and make stress management easier by keeping you focused on the present. Mindfulness practices don’t take much time but can positively impact your stress levels greatly.

Try meditation apps like Headspace and Calm for guided meditation that’s designed for stress relief. Taking even just a few moments between classes or during study sessions to do some deep breathing can also help you relax. Finally, be mindful and pay attention to your surroundings during your everyday activities, like walking to class or making coffee. This practice can help you feel more grounded in the moment.

4. Stay connected with friends and family

Having a support system in college is very important. Connecting with like-minded people who care about you provides a lot of emotional support, making stressful times easier to handle. Here are a few important things to make time for in your busy schedule:

Calling or video chatting with family members: Talking with your favorite family members can boost your mood during intense periods of stress.

Enjoying social time: Have some kind of fun social activity planned each week, whether it’s just hanging out with friends or attending a campus event.

Participating in extracurricular activities: Joining student clubs and organizations is a great way to find people with similar interests and make new friends.

5. Get enough sleep

With a demanding college schedule, sleep is the first thing students tend to neglect—but good sleep is crucially important for stress management and academic success. Set yourself a designated time to go to bed and wake up every day, and avoid screen time an hour before bedtime. Practicing good sleep habits is essential to getting quality sleep. You should also create a restful environment and make your room comfortable so you can make the most out of your rest time—even power naps!

6. Practice self-care

Self-care is one of the most essential factors of a balanced life. Activities that nurture you mentally and physically will help you handle stress better. Consider the following ideas to take care of yourself:

Engage in your favorite hobbies: Find time for things you enjoy, especially if they’re relaxing like painting, reading, or cooking.

Take breaks: Take short breaks every hour during your study sessions to avoid burnout from studying continuously.

Eat nourishing food: A healthy diet fuels both your brain and body, making you more immune from getting sick and contributing to a more positive attitude.

7. Seek help when you need it

Rather than suffer alone, don’t be afraid to seek help if you’re feeling overwhelmed. You can explore mental health support and wellness resources on sites like Amber, but college campuses also offer various mental health support services for students that can make a big difference.

Inquire whether your campus has a counseling center and professionals who specialize in managing student stress and mental health. For academic support, getting a tutor or joining a study group can help if you’re struggling with your course material. Just talking through your negative feelings with someone you trust can also be beneficial, whether it’s a friend, mentor, or professional. They can help you relieve stress while offering new perspectives.

College is a period of exciting growth and intense transformation, but it also brings some challenges. By trying out these stress-busting strategies, you can navigate your college life with resilience and comfort. Forming good habits like these will not only help you manage your stress but also make your college experience more successful and enjoyable. Like the rest of the Agatha Raisin series (which you don’t have to read in order), this book is an easy read that’s full of wit and page-turning mystery. While any Agatha Raisin book would make for a nice winter read, since this novel is set during Christmastime, it is all the more perfect if you celebrate!
The Shining by Stephen King

While people typically associate horror novels with Halloween, Stephen King’s iconic book The Shining takes place during winter. Jack Torrance relocates his family to the Overlook Hotel in the Rockies after being hired as the winter caretaker. Unbeknownst to him and his wife, Wendy, their son, Danny, has psychic abilities, that cause powerful supernatural events at the now snowed-in and secluded hotel. King captures the ensuing chaos masterfully, giving the reader a sense of horror and dread that builds until the stunning climax of the novel. If you're craving a chilling experience over break, crack open The Shining. When you finish the book, you can compare it to Stanley Kubrick’s 1980 film adaptation (even if King doesn’t like it himself).

This epic poem follows Odysseus’s 10-year journey home from the Trojan War. As the work is quite dense, you can take the entire winter to enjoy Odysseus's adventures. In the end, you’ll understand why this ancient classic has withstood the test of time and been enjoyed by generations of readers.

Nowadays, reading is often kicked to the curb in favor of other entertainment options. I think many students have experienced this. Whether it’s writing, drawing, or even coming up with a fun TikTok video, creative blocks can feel like hitting a wall.

But don’t worry, because I’ve learned a few tricks in my creative journey to help you climb over that wall (or maybe chip your way through it). Here are five things to try when you’re struggling with a creative block.

1. Take a break from the project

Sometimes, the harder you try to force something, the more stuck you feel. That’s when you know it’s time to step away. Go for a walk, listen to your favorite playlist, or even scroll Instagram (but not for too long).

Giving your brain a rest can help new ideas sneak in when you’re not expecting them. Even just five minutes of doing something relaxing can reset your mind. You’ll be surprised how often inspiration strikes when you’re not actively looking for it.

2. Try something new

When I’m out of ideas, having a completely different creative outlet helps. It could be as simple as doodling or experimenting with a new recipe when I’m stuck on a writing piece.

Switching things up tricks your brain into thinking outside the box. Trying a new hobby or activity can spark creativity in unexpected ways. You never know—that random idea from baking or painting might be just what you need for your original project.

3. Don’t fear the "bad ideas"

One important thing I’ve realized is not every idea has to be perfect! So let yourself create without overthinking it. Sometimes the "bad" ideas lead to something amazing or get your creative juices flowing again, at least. Even if an idea doesn’t work out, it’s a step closer to finding one that does. Mistakes are just proof that you’re trying, and that’s what really matters.

4. Talk out the problem

Have you ever noticed how explaining your problem to someone else suddenly makes the solution clearer? Talk to a friend or sibling or even just say your thoughts out loud to help untangle the mess in your head. (Shoutout to my little brother for being my sounding board more times than I can count!)

Sometimes hearing someone else’s perspective, especially someone who knows you well, can spark a completely new idea. Don’t underestimate how helpful a quick conversation can be.

5. Be patient with yourself

Lastly, remember that everyone deals with creative blocks. It doesn’t mean you’re not talented or you’ll never have a good idea again. Creativity isn’t a straight line, and sometimes you just need to wait for inspiration to come back. Being hard on yourself only makes the block worse, so take a deep breath and trust the process.

Next time you’re feeling creatively stuck on a school or personal project, try these tips. Remember, creative blocks are normal, and every artist, writer, or creator has been there. What matters is that you keep going, keep experimenting, and trust yourself to figure it out. Who knows—maybe your next big idea is just around the corner. You’re capable of so much more than you think, so don’t give up. Your creativity will always find a way back to you!

But spending time with family and squeezing in everything you want to do while you’re home can also be stressful.

This break from school should also be about rejuvenating before heading back to campus to finish up the semester. So here are some tips to help you make spring break as stress-free as possible, from strategies for spending time with your loved ones to making space for self-care and reflection.

Preparing for a stress-free break from school

Planning ahead is key to making your spring break as smooth and stress-free as possible. Here are a few things to consider to make the process of getting home easier.

Travel costs

If you’re traveling back home, costs can increase during popular travel times (like school breaks), so booking tickets early can save money and prevent last-minute panic. Whether you’re flying, taking the train, or carpooling with friends, a little foresight goes a long way.

Packing for your visit

When packing, aim for a light and practical approach. There’s no need to pack up everything in your dorm or overthink about what you “might” need. Pack essentials like chargers, medications, and toiletries. And remember, if you’re traveling by plane, leave a little room in your suitcase for any gifts or goodies you might bring back to school.

Plan for the weather

Check the weather forecast for your destination and consider any family events that might require specific attire. For example, bring your swimsuit if your family has a beach party every year during spring break. Or if you’ll be going camping in the woods, you’re likely better off with warm layers.

Keep your safety in mind

Safety is also paramount, especially if you’re traveling home alone. Keep your identification and travel documents close to you. Never leave your belongings unattended, and bring a personal safety device whenever possible. Always be aware of your surroundings by refraining from using headphones or anything else that can distract you.

Also take steps to remain safe when using ridesharing services like Uber or Lyft. For example, confirm the car, license plate, and driver before you get into the vehicle; share your trip details with a trusted friend or family member; and never pay cash for the ride.

Reconnecting and unplugging with family

Once you’re home, this is your opportunity to reconnect with family and friends—and, of course, blow off some steam before going back to school. Make sure the time you’re spending is intentional and planned to really connect. Some fun ideas include:

Organizing a game night

Cooking a meal together

Going for a nature expedition

Spending some time on the water together

These simple activities foster meaningful connections and remind everyone of the joy of being together, especially if you’re setting aside your devices and focusing on your in-person interactions. Unplugging helps you be more present and engaged with your loved ones, so step away from schoolwork, social media, and technology for a while to deepen your relationships and enhance your personal well-being.

Leave your phone in another room during family dinners or set limits on screen time so you can fully embrace the rest—and ask your family to do the same so no one feels ignored. You can do the same thing when seeing friends to make the most of the limited time you have together during break.

Making time for self-care and reflection

As much as you love your family and spending time with them during spring break, they aren’t the only people you need to focus on. You deserve some me-time too, so don’t forget to carve out some time for yourself!

As you plan out your week (or more) at home, factor in solo outings or a few activities that can help you unwind before or after family time. After a busy school year, you deserve some downtime to rest and recharge. Whether it’s journaling, reading, or revisiting a hobby you’ve missed, self-care helps your mental and emotional health.

Spring break is an excellent time for reflection. Think about your semester so far: What went well? What challenges did you face? What would you like to improve upon? Setting goals for the rest of the semester can help you return to school with renewed focus and motivation. Final exams and essays may hang over you like a storm cloud, but a fresh outlook can get you through the rest of the academic year.

Keeping your boundaries in place

Having boundaries while you’re home can help you maintain healthy relationships with your family. Establish when and how often you want to hang out to ensure your independence and set them up with proper expectations for your time at home.

Balancing family time with individual wellness can be tricky, but it’s worthwhile. If you’re feeling overwhelmed, communicate your needs to your family. They’ll likely understand and support your efforts to take care of yourself.

Spring break is fleeting, but the benefits of this recharge period can last long after you’ve returned to school. Focus on gratitude and savor the time you spend with loved ones to create memories you can carry with you for the rest of the year.
