Joining my high school’s speech and debate team as a freshman completely changed my life. I wasn’t previously interested in debate, but something about their booth at the club fair just drew me in. I went to my first meeting and fell in love with it. It was uncomfortable at first since I was nervous about being judged for my speaking and having to come up with arguments on the fly. As a result, my first debate rounds were awful. But the more I practiced and stepped out of my comfort zone, the better I got at it. I loved being able to see my improvement, trying different events, and working with the other members of my team. More than that, the time I spent doing speech and debate helped me learn some very valuable skills. Even though I’m in college now and no longer participate in debate, I still use these skills to succeed academically. Here are four areas you’re bound to improve upon by participating in speech and debate.

Presentations and public speaking

One of the most important parts of debate is being able to present your arguments, whether they’re prewritten or something you come up with mid-round. When I had my first-ever debate, I was terrible at this. I fidgeted with my hands, swayed back and forth, and ran out of things to say before my time was over. But after a lot of speaking drills and practice rounds, I got better. I stood more confidently, used my hands only for emphasis, made eye contact with the judges, and filled my speaker time. I learned that it wasn’t just about what I said but how I said it, which has helped me immensely. Speech and debate experience will help you determine exactly what pace you need to talk at to fulfill a certain time requirement when doing presentations for classes. You’ll learn how to speak convincingly and confidently while easily transitioning from one subject to another and moving through certain parts without looking at your notes. Even though I was nervous going into it, debate helped me conquer my fear of public speaking, which has proved useful ever since.

Research

For any pre-written speeches, you’ll have to do lots of research on whatever your topic is. That means you must find quality sources to use as evidence; otherwise, your opponents will be able to easily refute them. As part of speech and debate, I got really good at searching through various databases and evaluating different articles to find the perfect source. Research was a skill I had to work at, and the quality of my evidence increased the more I was forced to practice it. A lot of times, you’ll have to read complicated text about subjects you’re unfamiliar with, but this will help you increase your overall reading comprehension greatly. By doing quality research and reading academic papers regularly, you’ll be better prepared to tackle any subject or class. You’ll also learn how to find great sources for papers and presentations, plus how to make sure they’re the right ones for your projects. Ensuring that a source is reliable and unbiased is important in academics, careers, and life in general.

Forming strong arguments

When you join speech and debate, you’ll find you don’t just need good sources to win a round; you also need to form your resources and information into a convincing argument. All this made my writing far more convincing and helped me succeed in my debate events. It will also help you recognize arguments in papers you have to read, making them easier to talk about and analyze. Sometimes, it’s even helpful when you’re reading the news—you’ll be able to spot when someone’s using a fallacy or providing biased information. All in all, this skill is important no matter what debate event you participate in, and it’s especially important for college-level work.

Teamwork

The main event I did in the debate was called Public Forum, which required me to work with a partner for all our rounds. At first, I debated with a couple different people until I found someone I worked well with. Despite this, we still had to learn how to be good teammates. This involved dividing tasks fairly between us, communicating with each other in a fast-paced environment, and being respectful of one another even when things were difficult. When we did this, we highlighted each other’s strengths and did well at tournaments. Learning how to work with others is an important part of life, especially when you end up doing group projects in school. The skills you learn through speech and debate can help you manage those and are also particularly useful when you graduate college and enter the workforce.

Speech and debate didn’t just teach me how to be a debater but how to be a public speaker, a researcher, a good teammate, and so much more. All these skills will help you grow academically and will continue to benefit you throughout your life. Looking back at it now, it’s strange to think that I almost didn’t join my debate team because I wasn’t sure it would be for me. But as it turns out, there were plenty of events for me to try and plenty of space for me to grow. Sure, I was nervous at first. But it forced me to get out of my comfort zone and think on my feet. In the end, joining speech and debate changed my life and helped me become a better student. I encourage all of you to go out and try something new—after all, it might change your life too!

Decision day has come and gone, and now you are eagerly anticipating the start of your first year as an undergraduate. As you wrap up senior year and head into the summer, you’ll be busy enjoying your hard-earned time off before attending first-year orientation, connecting with your roommate, and scheduling an initial meeting with your new academic advisor. However, if you took dual enrollment or AP courses in high school, there is still work to be done! Amid all this excitement, don't forget a crucial step: making sure any college credits you earned from those AP exams or dual enrollment classes transfer to your new college.

College credit through dual enrollment courses

If you took a dual enrollment college class while attending high school, you likely have a transcript that verifies the number of transferable college credits you received. Although policies vary by school, the idea behind dual credit programs is for you to simultaneously earn both high school and college credit by taking pre-approved courses. Whether you traveled to a college campus to take courses traditionally, took college classes online, had a college professor who visited your high school, or even had a high school teacher who was certified to teach certain subjects at the college level, all these experiences most likely count for credit.

Transferring your college credits

Each university has its own policy about dual enrollment credits. Some schools will accept all credits from any accredited college, while others may place limits on how many or the types of credits that can be transferred. For example, one university may only accept academic subjects and refuse to transfer credits earned in vocational or career-oriented subjects. Another college may view dual enrollment credits as part of your high school experience and be unwilling to accept any of your previously earned credits.

Have these official records sent directly to the college you will be attending in the fall, then schedule a meeting with your college academic advisor to ask how these credits might apply to your degree plan. If you saved your syllabi from the dual enrollment classes, bring those to the meeting—sometimes a college needs more information about a class before awarding credit.

How to Find the Right Pre-College Summer Program for You

Pre-college summer programs can be truly transformative, offering a unique blend of learning, networking, and personal growth to high school students. And there is quite a mix of selective, vigorous, free, and pay-to-play programs to choose from. Recently, I had the opportunity to attend Harvard University’s Pre-law Summer Program organized by Harvard Student Agencies. Here are my insights from this experience to help you find a great pre-college program that aligns with your goals.

Learning through personal experience

My time in Harvard’s summer program was both eye-opening and disappointing at the same time. Outside of the program itself, I was able to explore downtown Boston and envision myself walking those streets as a college student. It was great to be in the middle of the hustle and bustle; I enjoyed being independent and feeling a sense of possibility and excitement about the adventures that lie ahead. With any on-campus pre-college program, take it as more than just an opportunity to participate in the academics but everything surrounding the college. Now on to the positives and negatives.

Pros of my pre-college program

The best part of my Pre-law program experience was learning more about the legal landscape, something I had limited knowledge of prior to the program. I learned about the court system, specific Supreme Court cases, and different kinds of law. Program attendees were also offered a tour of Harvard’s undergraduate campus as well as the Law School campus, which was nice but not something that mattered greatly to me.

Moreover, the program introduced me to a group of like-minded peers who shared my interest and ambitions in law. Engaging in discussions, debates, and mock trials with other students challenged me to think critically and develop my analytical skills. Ultimately, the program provided me with a different perspective on the legal field, confirming my passion and commitment to becoming a lawyer.

Cons of this summer program

However, there were some downsides to attending the Harvard Student Agencies’ summer program. Depending on which program you sign up for (Pre-law, Business, etc.), the class sizes can vary. In my Pre-law program, there were 50 kids in one classroom with only two undergraduate students to supervise them and, at times, only one instructor. If you find yourself in a program like this, classes might feel chaotic and overwhelming at times. Another risk of any summer program is if you’re looking to learn from people with real-world career experiences and what being in your field of interest really looks like, you might not get that. The only teachers offered in my program were undergraduate students, meaning they had little exposure to the legal field.

Questions to ask during the pre-college program research and selection process

When you start your pre-college program research, you need to realize that paid programs are much less competitive than free programs due to their costs. That isn’t to say you won’t be accepted to a competitive free program, but it may be harder to secure a spot. Most colleges offer pay-to-play programs to diversify their revenue, and attending one (more often than not) doesn’t increase your chances of getting into that college later. Here are some questions to ask to find the right pre-college program for you.

What are the program’s objectives? What do they hope the students will get out of the program, and is it clear based on their program’s web page?
What are your objectives? What knowledge do you hope to gain through a summer program? Do you want to be able to network or have a better shot at getting into that college? Do you just want to get a sense of what attending that college might be like?
Who will be teaching and participating in the program? A program could be run by students, professors, administrative staff, an external organization, or a combination. Knowing who is instructing you will help you understand what you will learn.
Are all applicants accepted to this program or is it more selective? For pay-to-play programs, it seems like all or most applicants are accepted. Be prepared to be with other students who run the spectrum of knowledge and experience if there is no selection process.

While Harvard’s Pre-law Summer Program provided some exposure to the legal field, it did have room for improvement. The experience, although somewhat marred by large class sizes and less experienced instructors, still grew my understanding and love of law. So for my fellow high school students, be sure to ask questions about your pre-college program(s) of interest and do your research! There are so many options out there, and some of them can be life changing. To figure out what fits your interests and goals, you have to do a deep dive into all the programs you’re thinking of applying to.
