The FAFSA is the key to unlocking federal grants, work-study opportunities, and loans, and it’s also used by many states and colleges to award their own aid.

For the 2026–27 school year, the FAFSA will once again open on October 1, 2025, with a federal deadline of June 30, 2026 and corrections due by September 12, 2026. After two years of delays caused by the FAFSA Simplification Act rollout, the form is back on schedule. The new FAFSA is shorter, easier to complete, and uses direct data transfer from the IRS to cut down on errors. But for students with separated or divorced parents, the updated rules about which parent must provide information can be confusing. Here’s what you need to know.

Who is your parent according to the FAFSA form?

The FAFSA requires you to report financial information from your legal parent or parents. Under the updated rules:

If your biological or adoptive parents are married, you must provide information for both of them. If your legal parent is widowed or was never married, you only include that parent’s information. If your parents are separated or divorced, you must include information from the parent who provided the most financial support during the prior-prior tax year—in this case, the 2024 tax year for the 2026–27 FAFSA. If both parents provided equal financial support, the parent with the higher adjusted gross income (AGI) must complete the form. And if your parents are not married but still live together, you must provide information for both of them, regardless of marital status.

This means that the older criteria—such as which parent you lived with, who had legal custody, or who claimed you on their taxes—no longer determine which parent completes the FAFSA.

Related: Read more answers to your questions about Tackling the Financial Aid Process With Your Parents

Additional questions you may need answers to

The situations above are the most common for students with separated or divorced parents. Here are answers to some specific scenarios students with separated or divorced parents may encounter:

What if my parent is remarried? If the parent responsible for the FAFSA is remarried, you must include both that parent’s and the stepparent’s financial information, even if the stepparent has not legally adopted you. The FAFSA looks at the entire household’s resources.

What if my stepparent is widowed? If your stepparent was married to your biological or adoptive parent but is now widowed, you do not include their information unless they legally adopted you before you completed the FAFSA.

What if I live with someone other than my parents? Regardless of where you live, you must report information about your legal parents. Living with other relatives or guardians does not change this. The following people are not considered parents for FAFSA purposes unless they have legally adopted you: grandparents, foster parents, legal guardians, older siblings, aunts and uncles, or widowed stepparents.

How will these changes affect my financial aid? These updates may impact the amount of aid awarded to students with separated or divorced parents. Because the FAFSA now requires financial details from the parent providing the most support (rather than the custodial parent), it may shift which household’s income and assets are considered. If one parent earns significantly more than the other, this change could reduce aid eligibility. Conversely, in some cases, students may benefit if the parent providing more support has a lower income.

Other major FAFSA changes for 2026–27

The FAFSA has gone through some of its biggest changes in decades. Here’s what applies to all families for the 2026–27 form:

Expected Family Contribution (EFC) has been replaced by the Student Aid Index (SAI), a new formula that colleges use to calculate need-based aid.

Income information is transferred directly from the IRS using the Direct Data Exchange, eliminating the need for most manual entry. All contributors (students, parents, or spouses) must give consent for this transfer. Without consent, the student will not receive federal aid.

Family size is now determined by dependents claimed on the parent’s most recent tax return. This ensures consistency but may reduce household size for families with non-tax-dependent children.

Child support received is now reported as an asset instead of income, which changes how it factors into aid eligibility.

Family farms, small businesses with 100 or fewer employees, and family-owned fisheries are no longer counted as reportable assets if the family lives on or operates them.

The maximum Pell Grant cutoff is set at twice the annual maximum award, which comes to about $14,790 for 2026–27.

The 2026–27 FAFSA is shorter and more streamlined, but it has also reshaped how families with divorced or separated parents report financial information. These changes can alter your aid eligibility, especially if your parents’ financial situations differ significantly. By understanding which parent must file and how new reporting rules work, you can avoid delays and make sure you receive the maximum aid available.

But finding money now can help you worry less about college expenses later on.

Scholarships are the best way to earn money for college, and you can find opportunities for just about every part of your personality, interests, and life as a student. That includes documented learning disabilities; there are some amazing scholarships just for LD students with dyslexia, autism, visual and hearing impairments, intellectual disabilities, traumatic brain injuries, and more.

Every student should try to set aside some time to apply for scholarships, and the more you apply for, the more chances you have to win! Here are some great opportunities to get your LD scholarship search started.

Anne Ford and Allegra Ford Thomas Scholarships

Students pursuing all types of higher education should check out these two scholarships from the National Center for Learning Disabilities. If you're a high school senior with a learning disability who’s planning to enroll in a full-time bachelor's degree program this fall, you should apply for the Anne Ford Scholarship. This $10,000 award is distributed over four years to one student with a documented learning disability.

Students who plan to enroll in two-year community college programs, vocational or technical training programs, or specialized programs for students with disabilities in the fall also have a chance to win money for school through the Allegra Ford Thomas Scholarship. This one is worth $5,000 and has the same requirements and deadline as the Anne Ford Scholarship. Students with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) who also have a learning disability are especially encouraged to apply. Just create an account and follow the requirements listed on the website, which include a recommendation letter and answers to three questions that can be answered in text, video, or audio format.

Applications are reviewed on a rolling basis with an annual deadline in April for both awards, so don't miss out on this chance to fund your education!

Focus on the Scholarship Search

Delays in processing the 2024–2025 Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) have caused stress and uncertainty among millions of high school seniors and their families across the country. While the FAFSA has been seemingly modified for the better—it’s now much shorter and more convenient to complete—it hit unexpected delays with the opening date and then the timeline for notifying students about the amount of financial aid they may receive.

Unfortunately, these delays have forced many students to put their plans and decisions on hold because they don’t know how much federal financial aid they may receive to help pay for college. Many colleges have also pushed back their traditional May 1 decision deadlines—some as late as June 1, 2024.

What can you do during this time of confusion?

Students and parents have no control over the current FAFSA situation, unfortunately—but one area of the financial process they can control is applying for scholarships. Did you know there are some 1.7 million private scholarships and fellowships available to students right now, with a total value of more than $7.4 billion? These scholarships are far easier to earn than most students realize and can make a significant impact. Take, for instance, one National Society of High School Scholars (NSHSS) member who financed her entire college career through scholarships and grants—and she is not the exception.

Focus on the scholarship search

Paying for higher education can seem insurmountable, and no one wants to graduate with the burden of college debt, which is why scholarships can make a big difference. Now, during this time of uncertainty surrounding the FAFSA, you are in an unprecedented situation with an unexpected window to put your energy toward something positive: applying for scholarships. And the only thing better than applying for scholarships is winning them! Here are a few tips on how anyone can secure more scholarships to help pay for college.

Research opportunities and apply often

It’s not too late to begin applying for scholarships if you haven’t already. Many scholarship deadlines are in the spring and summer, and some are open all year long on a rolling basis. You can research national scholarships as well as local community resources, religious organizations, employer programs, and advocacy groups to see what awards they offer.

I know this can seem like an overwhelming task. If you’re unsure how to apply for scholarships, NSHSS offers the Your First Scholarship, a chance for members to earn a $500 award by following a free, online step-by-step tutorial. It walks applicants through all the steps of the scholarship application process, provides tips, and offers a refined "toolbox" you can use to apply for other scholarships since many awards share common elements like personal essays and academic résumés. The FAFSA only applies to a single academic year; students already in college must resubmit their forms each year. So even college sophomores, juniors, and seniors should be researching and applying for scholarships as often as they can.

Related: How to Get and Stay Motivated in the Scholarship Search

Don’t assume you’re not eligible

There are scholarships available for everyone and nearly everything; family income, ethnicity, and academic merit don’t have to limit what you apply for. Countless awards are available for athletics, minorities, STEM/STEAM, community service, music, the arts, and more. There are opportunities through government organizations, small businesses, and large corporations. There are many scholarships available for first-generation college students. There are also offbeat scholarship opportunities: Tall Clubs International offers financial aid to women taller than 5’10” and men taller than 6’2” (and you don’t have to be a member to apply)!

Google is a great tool to find scholarships you’re eligible for. Pair up the word “scholarship” with whatever passion you may have or something unique about you that fits the criteria for a certain scholarship—you can even combine keywords to find even more opportunities. The more scholarships you find and realize you’re eligible for, the greater your chances of earning those dollars. And the smaller, less competitive awards can really add up too, so don’t dismiss them!

Apply with intent

Applying for scholarships is kind of like applying for college or a job: Applicants must carefully read the stated eligibility details, follow all directions, and keep applying for different awards. Make your applications distinctive and reflective of who you are and why you deserve to win. Ask teachers and others to read and critique your entire application, especially if the award you’re applying for requires an essay. Make sure everything is complete and error-free; correct spelling and proper grammar are non-negotiable.

Scholarships are useful for all students who plan to go to college now or in the future. They’re more than just small rewards, and applying for as many as possible can help alleviate the stress of navigating the financial aid process—especially with the uncertainty of the recent FAFSA delays. You’ll find that you’re eligible for more scholarships and grants than you may think, so you should act quickly and consistently when it comes to researching and applying!

My family’s constant encouragement and positive influence have helped tremendously in moving closer to achieving that dream. As newcomers to America, my parents sacrificed their own educational aspirations to provide for us kids. They constantly pushed us to value our education and interests. Thanks to Mom and Dad, I saw my siblings graduate with degrees in Mechanical Engineering, Neurobiology, Psychology, and Medicine. Watching my siblings complete college showed me that my own success was possible.

Their experiences also demonstrated the importance of a debt-free degree. My sisters all navigated college debt-free, while my brother struggled with the burden of repaying student loans. Seeing the differences in their experiences helped me understand the importance of having an early plan in place for paying for college. I was able to fund my college journey by following these tips, and you can too!

Get smart about planning

My sisters learned ways they could get through college debt-free through their memberships at Boys & Girls Clubs of America. I followed their example and also joined and participated in the Money Matters program through the partnership Boys & Girls Clubs has with the Charles Schwab Foundation. This program taught me practical skills to manage my finances, including saving, budgeting, and investing. I learned how to track my expenses and avoid overspending on unnecessary things. I also adopted the 50/30/20 rule, which recommends applying 50% of my income to necessities, 30% to wants, and 20% to savings. These lessons and more helped me make better decisions about my finances.

I strongly urge you to check with your school counselor and look into these types of programs offered through local Boys & Girls Clubs or similar groups. Taking advantage of financial literacy and management training can help you become smarter about your money management habits as you plan for college.

Start as early as possible

The Money Matters workshops not only equipped me with the tools I needed to plan for my college journey but also taught me how to put that plan into action immediately. Even before completing the program, I began to apply everything I learned. I kept a close eye on my spending and made much smarter decisions with my income. I challenged myself to research and apply for scholarships monthly, ensuring I was vigilant about seeking opportunities and programs that would support my journey through college.

Don’t be afraid to make a list of any questions you may have about saving, paying for college, or using credit cards as you learn and put these habits into practice. Talk to your counselor or a mentor about any concerns you may have. There’s no time like the present to start shaping a debt-free future when it comes to paying for college expenses.

Don’t miss out on scholarships

No matter the dollar amount, every scholarship opportunity is a chance to reduce your financial load and gain freedom from mounting educational costs since they provide free money that doesn’t have to be repaid. Many scholarships are specific to academic and personal achievements, from being a National Honor Society member to participating in extracurricular activities like playing on your school’s football team. Take time to research scholarship opportunities that reflect your academic profile, characteristics, and interests; craft compelling essays; and gather recommendation letters. The efforts you make now and throughout your educational career can have a huge impact on your financial future.

Earn college credit in high school

Taking Advanced Placement (AP) classes and pre-college programs in high school can potentially earn you college credit and slash the number of semesters you’ll need to spend working toward your degree. Fewer semesters mean savings on tuition, fees, books, and sometimes living expenses. You’ll want to explore these credit-earning options with your counselor to figure out which program is best for you.

Apply for financial aid

It’s essential that you submit the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) as soon as you can. While completing this form may be somewhat of a complex process, it’s a worthwhile investment. The majority of FAFSA applicants do receive some form of financial aid no matter their financial need, and funds are usually awarded on a first-come, first-served basis. To simplify the process, learn what steps you and your parents need to take to fulfill all the application requirements and deadlines, including collecting important financial documents. Then start and complete the form as soon as it opens during your senior year, plus every year you’re in college. You never know what federal aid you may qualify for!

That’s because when your SAT and ACT scores are high, you become eligible for more scholarships. Here are some ways to use your standardized test scores to make college more affordable.

How test scores affect financial aid

Beyond being able to apply for more scholarships with your test scores, you may also automatically receive more financial aid from colleges. High SAT or ACT scores can directly lead to financial aid offices offering you more money that doesn’t need to be paid back, including institutional scholarships and grants, in your financial aid package. Along with your class rank, GPA, and extracurricular involvement, standardized test scores can be one of the biggest factors in being awarded merit-based scholarships from colleges. Certain schools will also give out guaranteed scholarships to students who hit a minimum SAT or ACT score, though some may have a minimum class rank or GPA threshold as well.

Where to find other standardized test–based scholarships

Depending on if you took or are planning to take the SAT or ACT, there are a variety of ways to find scholarships that are awarded based on standardized test scores. Here are a couple of helpful resources.

Scholarships.com

Scholarships.com is a great website that can be used for finding scholarships for both SAT and ACT scores. In the search tool, simply pick what score range you are in and a variety of scholarships will be presented. What’s great about this tool is that it features scholarships for almost every potential score, so almost everyone can benefit from it. One drawback of these award opportunities is that certain scholarships may require more than just a standardized test score, such as being a resident of a certain area or attending a specific university, so be sure to review the eligibility requirements before applying.

College Transitions

College Transitions is another useful site to find both SAT and ACT score-based scholarships. This resource is especially helpful as it efficiently lays out the requirements of eligibility to apply to each scholarship. Certain scholarships on this website will only take either an SAT or ACT score, so if you’re below the score threshold for a specific scholarship, consider retaking the exam or trying the other test if you have time to increase your eligibility for more scholarships.

Related: 3 Easy Strategies to Increase Your Scholarship Eligibility

How to improve your scores to win scholarships

After a brief exploration into either of the above resources, you’ll quickly realize that the higher your standardized test scores are, the more scholarships you will be eligible for. You should take every opportunity to increase your chances of getting admitted into specific colleges and receive the most potential scholarship money. Here are a couple tips to improve your scores while you have time.

Take a lot of practice tests

Many students take the SAT or ACT multiple times, which is a good strategy to maximize your scores in hopes you can get over some of those eligibility thresholds. The easiest way to improve your scores is to take practice tests frequently. To effectively use this strategy, you must take a practice test, mark every question you got wrong or guessed on in every section, and focus your studying on the topics where you lost the most points.

Take both the SAT and ACT

Although most students focus on just one standardized test to place in the highest percentage of students, you could consider taking both the SAT and ACT. There’s a lot of crossover in the content, so there’s a good chance you could do well on both. However, I would advise you to really focus your studying on the test you’re best equipped to do well on, since taking both exams requires more time and money. But if you are willing and able to take both tests, you may score higher on one over the other and be eligible for more test-based scholarships.

Although the SAT and ACT may not seem as important as before the pandemic with many colleges going test-optional, succeeding on these exams is still key to boosting your high school résumé and receiving more financial aid and scholarships. You should continue to focus on improving your scores for the chance to receive the highest amount of college funding possible.
