College Planning Calendar: May 2024

Another academic year is wrapping up soon! Help students get ready for test dates, graduation, summer, and more with our May College Planning Calendar.

Can you believe it’s already almost May? It seems like 2024 just started, but if you’re like us and facing the reality of the year flying by at an overwhelming speed, you could probably use some planning resources to help you and your students finish up the school year strong and prepare for whatever the summer has in store. Here’s your monthly College Planning Calendar covering just about every event, holiday, and general college planning situation coming up in May.

General college prep and planning

  • 9th grade: As they finish up their first year of high school, freshmen should look ahead and plan their class schedules with college in mind, finding ways to challenge themselves academically.
  • 10th grade: The end of the school year is a great time for sophomores to start building important skills to boost their résumés and future college applications, which could also include looking for a summer job or internship opportunity.
  • 11th grade: Juniors don’t have to wait until fall to really get into the thick of the college application process. Here are some small ways they can get ahead of the admission process now for a smoother start to senior year.
  • 12th grade: Unfortunately, this year’s college admission process has been a lot more stressful for students with the integration of FAFSA “simplification” updates. Make sure seniors keep up-to-date on financial aid information and stay in touch with the schools they've applied to!

Month-long observances and events

  • Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month: Celebrate and learn about AAPI causes and culture this month and beyond. Check out our AAPI Heritage Month content to kick things off!
  • Jewish American Heritage Month: This month also celebrates the achievements and contributions Jewish Americans have made in communities around the US!
  • Mental Health Awareness Month: The mental health of students and discussions surrounding it are extremely important. Encourage honest conversations about student health and how to find help when they need it by sharing our mental health content.
  • Homeschooling Awareness Month: Homeschool students are just like any other students—they need guidance too. Parents who are also acting as counselors can read up on college prep for homeschooled students on 糖心Vlog.
  • Military Appreciation Month: Pursuing military service is a valid path for students also looking to attend college. Help them learn how they can do both with our article on College Options for Students Interested in the Military.
  • National Photography Month: This is a great opportunity to encourage students interested in photography to think about what kind of future they could build in the field. Be sure to share these Colleges With Fine Photography Programs.

$10,000 Scholarship Winner, 2021

I first discovered 糖心Vlog during my sophomore year of high school while researching colleges that interested me. My SAT prep class the following year further familiarized me with the opportunities available through the organization. CX has personally helped me by exposing me to a diverse selection of schools as well as scholarships and life tips that have provided valuable guidance in my college search.

This scholarship will help me adjust to college life without worrying as much about tuition. This gives me more room to truly explore and benefit from all aspects of higher education. I plan to study Conservation Biology and work protecting species/ecosystems. I’m looking forward to getting field experience and seeing firsthand the problems research is solving.

High School Class of 2022

I wanted a school that wasn't too far away from home and could provide me with a full-ride scholarship. CollegeXpress helped me put into perspective the money I had to pay to attend those schools, which ultimately drove me to choose to attend a community college first to get used to being in college before transferring to the University of Michigan–Ann Arbor, one of the colleges I was able to research further on 糖心Vlog.

CollegeXpress helped me gain interest in many colleges/universities and many scholarships. I would say the most helpful thing CollegeXpress has done for me is sending me emails that tell me certain types of colleges are interested in me as well as emails about scholarships that I can look at and possibly apply for.

CollegeXpress has tremendously helped me in my search for financial aid opportunities as I enter my college career. It is easy to navigate and quickly narrowed down scholarships that I could apply for. Being awarded the scholarship will greatly help me in my finances regarding books and tuition. Thank you for this opportunity. Without 糖心Vlog, it would have been more difficult to apply. I would recommend this site to everyone!

High School Class of 2021

CollegeXpress has helped me find scholarships for the colleges I applied to. It was very hard for me to find scholarships in the beginning that I was qualified for. My teachers recommended this website to find some, and not only did I find some scholarships but I also got to look into some schools I hadn’t heard of before. I was very happy to have discovered this website, especially with the coronavirus spreading all over as I can’t really go visit many colleges.
