Pulling an All-Nighter: Bad for Your Health?

All-nighters might seem like a productive solution to your procrastination problem. But this study technique can actually harm your health! Learn more now.

An endless night cramming everything there is to know about the Civil War. Spending the wee hours memorizing the function of the nervous system. Finishing the last pages of that essay at 4:00 am. Maybe you’ve been in one of those situations. All-nighters often seem like a great solution to that pesky procrastination problem. But what most people believe to be a productive studying technique can actually be harmful to your health. Here’s why...

Difficulty retaining information and concentrating

After cramming all night long, you’d think you’d be well prepared for the next day’s test. So why can't you seem to remember half of what you studied last night? The memory part of your brain experiences more activity when you are sleeping than when you are awake, and it needs those sleeping hours to recharge. When you deprive it of that crucial rest time, it doesn’t retain information properly. Also with a lack of sleep comes a lack of concentration. After a sleepless night, your attention span shortens and you may have difficulty focusing on the exam.

Weight gain

When hunger strikes at 2:00 am, you will most likely be craving that leftover pizza rather than an apple. When you are sleep deprived, the hormones ghrelin (tells us when to eat) and leptin (tells us when to stop eating) tend to get a bit altered in your body. You start to produce more ghrelin than leptin, which can lead to gaining that well-known Freshman 15.

Digestive problems

When you sleep, your body uses that time to repair, but those late-night snacks tend to fill your body with excess sugar. When you stay awake all night, your body doesn’t have the chance to filter out all that extra glucose, which could potentially cause kidney problems or even lead to diabetes.

Caffeine side effects

It’s almost impossible to pull an all-nighter without a little caffeine boost, but that’s probably the last thing your sleep-deprived body needs. When your eyes can barely stay open for that last-minute cramming, it is only natural to depend on energy drinks or coffee. Not only do these sources of caffeine have an excessive amount of sugar, but they will also cause your body to shut down a few hours later, and come test time, it will be difficult to stay awake. An overload of caffeine can also cause anxiety and even panic attacks in the long run.

If you pull one or two all-nighters in your lifetime, you don’t need to be worried—just don’t make it a habit. The long-term effects are more severe for those with chronic sleep deprivation. Try to get as much sleep as you can, when you can, and your body will thank you later.

For me, CollegeXpress has given me a valuable tool to use with my students to explore colleges easily beyond objective data. It helps me find colleges for students that fit their needs and wants that aren’t quite so black and white. It's a wealth of knowledge, and the Type-A side of me loves all the lists and the fact that I know they're coming from folks who know what they're talking about. I share it with colleagues and students alike, and it's always well received.

$500 Refer-a-Friend Scholarship Winner

Toward the beginning of last year, I was searching for scholarships to apply to through my school, town, websites online, and anything else I could find. I asked tons of questions [online] about scholarships and the best places to find them because I was desperate and needed as many as I could find. I came across a ton of bogus websites, but as soon as I found 糖心Vlog, I knew I had to tell other people about it. It was definitely the most helpful site I came across, so I told my friends about it. 糖心Vlog is definitely a website worth giving as a source.

CollegeXpress has helped me with all aspects of applying for college. The website is extremely easy to navigate and gives access to so many resources. I was able to research all of the colleges I was interested in, find out any information I wished to know about, and keep them organized in a list. I've also been able to research scholarships and save them as resources for later. I've used many websites in my college and scholarship search, and CollegeXpress has by far been my favorite one to use.

$10,000 Scholarship Winner, 2021

I first discovered 糖心Vlog during my sophomore year of high school while researching colleges that interested me. My SAT prep class the following year further familiarized me with the opportunities available through the organization. CX has personally helped me by exposing me to a diverse selection of schools as well as scholarships and life tips that have provided valuable guidance in my college search.

This scholarship will help me adjust to college life without worrying as much about tuition. This gives me more room to truly explore and benefit from all aspects of higher education. I plan to study Conservation Biology and work protecting species/ecosystems. I’m looking forward to getting field experience and seeing firsthand the problems research is solving.
