5 Quick Tips for Finding Your First Job

There's a lot of advice out there to help you find a job, but some of it just drones on. Here are five quick tips to help you get along in the job search.

Looking for your first job after college can be overwhelming, especially in a tight job market. Many students are unsure about where to begin. It helps to think of a job search as a process that involves a series of steps. Putting extra effort into each step will help you land that first job and put you on the path toward a long, successful career.

1. Decide on the type of job you want

Vague career goals can be one of the biggest detriments when searching for your first postgraduate job. Don't waste time applying for jobs that aren't a good fit for your qualifications. Instead, assess your education, skills, experience, personality, and interests; then compile a list of jobs that are a good fit. This part of the process can even begin several months prior to graduation.

2. Use available career counseling resources

Become familiar with your college's Career Center; it can be an invaluable resource as you define your career goals and conduct your job search. Read a career coaching book, like , or do some career-related research online. is a great source of information about salaries and growth potential for specific types of jobs.

3. Create a winning résumé

To put together a résumé that will attract the interest of potential employers, look at job postings and get an idea about the types of experience and knowledge that employers are seeking. Don't worry if you lack professional experience. Instead, highlight job-related coursework and include your additional qualifications, such as computer skills. When describing internships and summer jobs, focus on your contributions and initiative. Once you've decided on the content of your résumé, choose a format that is eye-catching, well organized, and easy to read.

4. Put together a list of target employers

Use online resources to create a list of companies where you'd like to work. In addition to lists like Forbes' and Fortune's Top Employers, look into industry-specific publications. You can also find potential employers by attending job fairs, registering at job search websites, and signing up for on-campus interviews at your career center. Keep in mind that you can increase your pool of target employers if you are flexible about relocating. Find out all you can about each employer on your list by reading company websites and news articles.

5. Tailor a cover letter for each employer

Once you have a winning resume and a list of target employers, it's time to work on cover letters. The purpose of a cover letter is to introduce yourself to employers and make them want to read your resume. Cover letters should be brief and concise, focusing on why your background, education, experience, and personal qualities will make you a valuable employee. If you're sending a query in response to a job posting, tailor your cover letter to the job description.

High School Class of 2022

I wanted a school that wasn't too far away from home and could provide me with a full-ride scholarship. CollegeXpress helped me put into perspective the money I had to pay to attend those schools, which ultimately drove me to choose to attend a community college first to get used to being in college before transferring to the University of Michigan–Ann Arbor, one of the colleges I was able to research further on 糖心Vlog.

This whole website has helped me overcome the attitude I had before. I was scared to even approach the thought of college because it was so much. I knew it wasn’t just a few easy steps, and I panicked mostly, instead of actually trying. Without realizing it, 糖心Vlog did exactly what I usually do when I panic, which is take it one step at a time. With college I forget that because it’s more than just a small to-do list, but this website was really helpful and overall amazing. So thank you!

My high school counselor introduced me to 糖心Vlog freshman year. It has made such a difference in high school, and I plan to continue relying on it in college. 糖心Vlog is my go-to because it addresses each aspect of being a student. There are the articles you’d expect regarding college applications and financial aid, but you will also find advice on things like de-stressing and maintaining relationships while balancing a heavy course load. 糖心Vlog will also keep you updated on current scholarships through e-mails each Saturday. (They don’t harass you with any product promotion like so many other sites do.) 糖心Vlog is a lot like an older sibling who has already conquered the challenges you are facing. Now, they are reaching out a helpful hand. I say take it.

CollegeXpress has helped me tremendously during my senior year of high school. I started off using the college search to find more information about the universities I was interested in. Just this tool alone gave me so much information about a particular school. It was my one-stop shop to learn about college. I was able to find information about college tuition, school rank, majors, and so much more that I can't list it all. The college search tool has helped me narrow down which college I want to attend, and it made a stressful process surprisingly not so stressful. I then moved to the scholarship search tool to find scholarships to apply for because I can't afford to pay for tuition myself. The search tool helped me find scholarships that I was eligible for. The tool gave me all the information I could ever need about a particular scholarship that was being offered. The 糖心Vlog scholarship search tool is so much better than other tools offered, like the Chegg scholarship search. Thanks to 糖心Vlog, I was able to apply to tons of scholarships in a relatively easy way!
